JESUS’ BIRTHDAY — WHY THE BIBLE IS SILENT (AND WHY THAT MATTERS).
One striking truth many overlook:
* The Bible never reveals the date of Jesus’ birth.
* The Bible never reveals the burial place of Moses.
This silence is intentional.
“So Moses the servant of the LORD died there… but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.”
— Deuteronomy 34:5–6 (KJV)
Why?
Because God knows the human heart. Fallen humanity has always been prone to idolize places, dates, and symbols rather than worship God “in spirit and in truth” (John 4:23).
The same principle applies to Christ’s birth.
WHAT THE BIBLE DOES NOT DO
* It never commands the celebration of Christ’s birthday
* It never gives a date
* It never connects His birth with winter festivals
Instead, Scripture directs our attention to:
His incarnation
His obedience
His sacrifice
His resurrection
“For even Christ pleased not himself…”
— Romans 15:3
THE PAGAN STREAM BENEATH MODERN TRADITIONS
History testifies that when Christianity compromised with paganism, ancient sun-worship festivals were absorbed and renamed.
The image above traces how ancient deity concepts evolved across cultures and were eventually blended into Western traditions:
• Nimrod — post-Flood rebellion & sun worship
• Baal — fertility & seasonal cycles
• Osiris — death-and-rebirth mythology
• Odin — winter god, gift-giver imagery
• St. Nicholas — later venerated figure
• Sinterklaas — folkloric adaptation
• Santa Claus — commercialized myth
This is not about attacking people.
* It is about exposing systems that redirect worship away from Christ.
“Learn not the way of the heathen…”
— Jeremiah 10:2
SPIRIT OF PROPHECY CONFIRMATION.
Ellen G. White warned that pagan customs would be absorbed into Christianity under Christian names:
“The customs of the church are the customs of the world baptized.”
— Review and Herald
She never condemned honoring Christ — but she consistently warned against false worship cloaked in tradition.
HOW SHOULD BELIEVERS RESPOND?
Teach our children truth — not myths
Honor Christ daily — not seasonally
Refuse tradition when it contradicts Scripture
Exalt Christ’s life, law, and sacrifice
“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”
— 1 Corinthians 10:31
PROPHETIC RELEVANCE
The final deception will not be open atheism.
It will be false worship mixed with truth.
The Three Angels’ Messages call us back to:
* “Fear God, and give glory to Him… worship Him that made heaven and earth.”
— Revelation 14:7
A CHRIST-CENTERED APPEAL
This is not about condemning hearts —
It is about calling God’s people out of confusion and into light.
Let us worship Christ as Scripture reveals Him,
not as tradition reshapes Him.
“Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”
— 1 John 5:21
Maranatha. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
FOOTNOTE — ADVENTIST HOME COUNSEL ON CHRISTMAS
Ellen G. White did not support Christmas as a traditional holy day, yet she gave clear instruction on how the season could be redeemed for God’s glory:
“God would be well pleased if on Christmas each church would have a Christmas tree on which shall be hung offerings, great and small, for these houses of worship.”
— Adventist Home
She also counseled:
• Make Christmas a season of benevolence, not selfishness
• Turn gifts into missionary offerings
• Teach children self-denial and sacrifice
• Use the occasion to point hearts to Christ’s mission, not pagan myths
Christmas was never meant to exalt tradition —
but to be redirected toward Christ, His cause, and His law.
