THREE ANGELS BROADCASTING NETWORK DEVOTIONAL
A Christmas Surprise.

“Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! For He has done marvelous things; His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory. The Lord has made known His salvation; His righteousness He has revealed in the sight of the nations. He has remembered His mercy and His faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.” Psalm 98:1-3.
Surprise!
Most likely, you’ve experienced the fun of an unexpected birthday party—whether you were the one swept off your feet in shock, or a participant, hiding in a dark corner or behind a door. Undoubtedly, much preparation goes into the precise planning of such an event. In fact, there’s probably more enjoyment in waiting for that door to open as everyone holds their breath, ready to jump out and shout with joy, as anything else. Parents hold back excited children who cannot keep their silence or their secret position any longer. Yes, the thrill can be overwhelming.
This week, in anticipation of Christmas, I studied and meditated on the story of the birth of Jesus, and something caught my heart’s attention that I’d overlooked so many times. We’ve all heard and read how the angel appeared to the shepherds in the field that night. He announced to them the greatest news ever… that Jesus had been born– God in human form! But the words were barely spoken when, “Suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!’” Luke 2:13–14.
My heart jumped with excitement as I thought of that incredible moment in history. Like the big moment of revelation at a surprise birthday party, the heavenly host must have been hanging on every word the angel (perhaps Gabriel) said. I wonder if God held them back until the perfect moment when they burst out of the night sky shouting praises—their joy and excitement no longer restrained! I pray that God will bring that type of unbridled delight to our hearts as we take time to meditate on His perfect Plan of Salvation.
This week has been unlike any other at Christmas, as God opened truths of this precious moment in time for me. He gave me the gift of a Christmas like I experienced as a child—giving me a glimpse of that wonder-filled night that truly set my soul afire with joy!
