The night wasn’t as silent as we have been told
The sheep all were baaing out there in the cold
The shepherds stood warming their hands by the fire
When suddenly sounded a heavenly choir

The shepherds drew back with great fear and with dread
Then the brightness of angels surrounded their heads
Do not be afraid, for good news we now bring
Today in a stable is born a new King

The shepherds stood stunned at the sight they had seen
So they went through the darkness to where He had been
They followed the star as it led them ahead
To a newborn child lying fast in a shed

The cattle were lowing, the sheep answered baa
The small stable filled with the near and the far
For many had followed that bright shining star
All gazed on the child by its soft, gentle light

As He lay there sleeping so peaceful and still
Did His mother yet know of heaven’s great will
This child born in meekness and wrapped up in skin
Would one day bring mercy and freedom from sin

The cost for our freedom, this life so small
When He becomes a man, it will cost Him His all
His blood will be shed on a rugged tree
To bring hope and freedom to you and to me

This gift given freely beneath starlit skies
Still calls to our hearts if we dare lift our eyes
For the King in the stable still whispers today
Do not be afraid — I have made you a way
