Chapter 3 The Commandments of God

Adventists have claimed uniqueness among Christian movements because they are the leading group among very few that keep the Sabbath according to the fourth commandment of the Decalogue. This has led us to a kind of religious pride, because we have all truth and have the Bible as our only creed. God saw this pride and warned us in Revelation 3:17:

17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

Keeping the commandments is associated with the Three Angels’ Messages in Rev 14:12:

12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

In Greek, there are two words that are translated into English as commandments: “Nomos” and “entole.” John is very specific in the use of these two words, more so than other authors. A systematic study of his gospel, the three epistles and Revelation makes that quite clear: “Nomos” refers to the Decalogue, God’s Law. “Entole” refers to the new commandment that Jesus gave His disciples:

John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

Not once in Revelation is “nomos” used. Neither is the Sabbath mentioned at all. The saints that keep the commandments of God (Rev 14:12) are a group of people that show love to one another. This passage is not referring to the Decalogue. This does not mean the Sabbath Commandment, or any of the other nine, is unimportant to God’s saints at the end of time. It certainly is, with all the references to sevens and seventh in Revelation. However, Rev 14:12 is focused on the disposition and behaviour of God’s saints toward one another.

As far as keeping the commandments of God, the Decalogue, Adventists are so strong in holding up the fourth commandment as our uniqueness, that we are unaware of an enemy that infiltrated us in the early twentieth century, and had us change Gods from the One True God, to a trinity. We still keep the fourth commandment, but have broken the most important commandment of all, the first, that says we should not worship any other god than the One True God. Therefore our corporate movement does not keep the “nomos” of God, and we tend not to keep the “entole” either.

It is time now that we have a deep look at ourselves, and ask God to help us keep His New commandment where we will love our fellow man, and also keep all the commandments in the Decalogue. We need to Love God with all our hearts, minds and souls, and our neighbours as ourselves.
