Chapter 4 The Spirit of Prophecy

A related text to the one we looked at in chapter 3:

Rev 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

is Rev 12:17 where the remnant is characterised as keeping the commandments (“entole” – love one to another) of God and have the testimony of Jesus:

17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

The testimony of Jesus is defined in Rev 19:10 as being the Spirit of Prophecy:

10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

The Spirit of Prophecy is one of the gifts of the Spirit (1 Cor 12:10), and the person that has that gift is a prophet by default. There have been prophets through all the ages, people through whom God communicated to mainly His people. When the Advent Movement came to being in the 19th century, God had a woman among them to whom He gave the gift of prophecy. She brought messages to these people from God, helping them to understand the Bible and putting their doctrines in place. Adventists have interpreted the presence of this woman, Ellen G White, in the early Movement, as the second part of Rev 12:17 identifying this movement as the remnant church. We have already seen in chapter 3 that the commandments of God do not refer to the Decalogue. In a similar way, the Spirit of Prophecy referred to in Rev 12:17 and 19:10 do not refer to EG White in particular and thus the Advent Movement, but refers to God’s saints at the end of time. God will not communicate His messages to one person at the end of time, but to a multiplicity of people, the saints of God. We see this concept in Joel 2:28:

28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

When God pours out His Spirit (Latter Rain) sons and daughters will prophesy. Not one prophet, but plurality. Observe also the event of the Outpouring of the Spirit. This has not occurred yet, so it is a future event. Ellen White passed away more than 100 years ago, so this is not referring to her, but people who will receive the gift of prophecy when God pours out His Spirit in the future, soon.

On two counts, therefore, the remnant is not the Advent movement, but people who have love for their fellow man, and people who have received the gift of prophecy when God pours out His Spirit at the Latter Rain.

If you are a son or a daughter of God, and God pours out His Spirit at the Latter Rain, He may choose you to have the gift of prophecy to communicate His messages and will to His people. There are other gifts of the Spirit that He will share among His people as well. Pray to God to have you ready to be useful for Him now, and when He pours out His Spirit.
