THREE ANGELS BROADCASTING NETWORK DEVOTIONAL
In God’s Waiting Room.

By Shelley Quinn December 28th, 2025

“I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord!” Psalm 27:13–14

I’m a fast person. I walk fast, I eat fast, I learn fast, and work twice as fast as most people. My husband calls me his “race horse.” When the doors of an elevator open, I’m out the gate—even if I’m getting off on the wrong floor. Needless to say, I’m not fond of slowing down to wait, but I find myself today in God’s waiting room.

Time is generally thought of in terms of linear advancement. For the past seven months of my life—as I’ve faced recovery from two major surgeries—time has warped into an inescapable cycle of circling. I expected to return to work within six weeks of my initial surgery. Instead, I’ve been stuck going round and round in a holding pattern, as if waiting for life to reboot. Waiting can cause anxiety-ridden thoughts, which breed impatience. Impatience can cause us to take self-defeating actions. I’ve certainly been guilty of trying to rush my recovery. Over-zealous efforts have backfired.

Facing my physical limitations was devastating at first, but God brought me to a place that can only be described as “settled acceptance.” This is where I finally accepted the situation is beyond my control, and remembered God still has a plan for my life. That recognition settled my heart’s anxieties, and allowed me to rest in God’s timing. I considered how an irritant inside the shell of an oyster produces a pearl. I’m learning the patience of an oyster—I know God is forming a new treasure inside me.

While waiting, I’ve learned to focus on the hidden blessings of God. Rather than dwelling on my lack, my heart is filled with gratitude for what I have. I’ve learned prayers of thanksgiving to God banish all feelings of discouragement and strengthen my heart. He fills me to overflowing with hope—eager expectation of what He will do in the future.

Don’t lose heart if you are in God’s waiting room. Time is not wasted there, as long as you keep hope in your heart. Hope implies patient waiting. As time passes, the painfully sharp edges of memory will be worn down, bringing you relief. God will strengthen your heart through eager expectation of His love and goodness. He will increase your courage to endure as you wait on Him.
