“So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.” Genesis 3:6

Have you ever thought about what it must have been like in the beginning, when Adam and Eve walked this earth? After sin, everything changed. Just imagine Adam and Eve as they suddenly notice a leaf falling from a tree and realize that the dying process has begun as a curse upon the earth. As they walk a little farther, their eyes turn to that perfect and beautiful red rose they had found the day before that dreadful day, but now there’s a change. A petal falls to the ground, and tears stream down their cheeks as they realize the price of their disobedience.

A friend of mine recently told me about his peppermint plant, and how it was out of control. It was growing everywhere—even into their flowers—and in order to kill the peppermint, he will also have to kill the other flowers. He went on to say that he regrets the day he planted it. Then I mentioned that mom also had peppermint plants, but because she would always pick the leaves to use in her smoothies, they never had a chance to grow out of control.

So why these different outcomes? One plant was controlled, while the other was left to do its own thing. Isn’t that how it is with sin in our lives? One wrong decision can lead us down a path of regret, just like Adam and Eve.

It’s been said that it’s Adam and Eve’s fault that sin entered in, but don’t we do the same thing when we sin against Christ? Everyday we’re given the opportunity to make decisions, whether good or bad; and the question is always whether we honor our Savior with them, or not. God’s love is so great that He gave us the most valued gift Heaven could give, and that was His Son.

You see, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9. That includes you, my friend. Just as the peppermint plant needs to be controlled to keep it from “doing its own thing”, we need to let our lives be guided and directed by Jesus Christ. Let’s invite our Savior into our lives so He can make us into His masterpiece.
