Chapter 10 The Remnant of her seed

At the Great Disappointment of 1844 the majority of the Advent people left the movement and only a small number of earnest seekers after truth remained. They earnestly and prayerfully searched the Scriptures and the prophecies to find out what was wrong with the Millerite message of the return of Jesus in 1844. From this minority of Adventists came the Seventh-Day Adventist church. They were the Remnant of the Advent movement that led up to 1844.

Among the doctrines that were established in the two years following the Great Disappointment was the meaning of the 2300-Day prophecy – the cleansing of the Heavenly Sanctuary, unique to Adventists. Another unique doctrine was that the Seventh-Day Adventist church is the Remnant of Prophecy described in the last verse of Rev 12:

Rev 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Adventists see themselves described in Rev 12:17, firstly because they are the remnant of the Millerite Advent Movement, further characterised by the defining two concepts: keeping the commandments of God, and having the testimony of Jesus. The testimony of Jesus is defined in Rev 19:10 as the Spirit of Prophecy:

10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

In chapter 3 of this book we have found that the commandments of God are not the Decalogue, but Christ’s command that we should love one another, and in chapter 4 we have found that the Spirit of Prophecy referred to by Revelation is not EG White, but the prophetic gift bestowed upon the 144 000. The Remnant of her seed is not the Seventh-Day Adventist church, but the rest of God’s children that were not chosen or earmarked to be chosen as one of the 144 000 apostles. The large group of people that have converted to the true worship of God as a result of the preaching of the Three Angels’ Messages during the 3.5 years between the Out Pouring of the Holy Spirit in the Latter Rain, and the Corporate Close of Probation are also a part of the Remnant. The Remnant is characterised by the great multitude in the second half of Revelation 7. Two verses define who they are:

13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?
14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

The Remnant are therefore all of God’s children who are alive at the Second Advent besides the 144 000. They will comprise roughly one tenth of the Earth’s population at that time:

Rev 11:13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

From Rev 7:14 it is clear that they come from great tribulation. The rest of Rev 7 shows that they have suffered all sorts of hardships, exemplified by verse 16:

16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.

If you are alive at the Second Advent of Jesus, you will want to be one of the Remnant, the great multitude. That will mean you will have to survive extreme hardships. Satan will persecute God’s Remnant in wrath, because he cannot get to the 144 000. Take comfort that God will carry you through. He has given us the information about what is to come to remind us that He is in control. The lost will have even greater hardships that will lead to their death during the Seven Last Plagues.

May God bless you as you prepare your heart before Him so that you can endure the coming crisis, by His Grace.
