Chapter 13 The Mount of Transfiguration
Many people associate the Two Witnesses with the Mount of Transfiguration, because in Rev 11:5, 6 the activities of the Two Witnesses allude to Moses and Elijah, the two beings from heaven that met Christ on the mount:
5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.
6 These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.
However, what we miss is that on the Mount of Transfiguration there were three beings glorified: Moses and Elijah, but also Christ. Peter wanted to make three tabernacles, one for each of them:
Matt 17:4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
Likewise, we miss in Rev 11 that there are three beings alluded to. Moses and Elijah very obviously in verses 5 and 6 but hidden in the sequence of the narrative of this chapter is the experience of Jesus. He was sealed at His baptism for His mission, then He worked for 3.5 years. At the end of the 3.5 years, Satan instigated His crucifixion, He was dead for three days, resurrected, and then ascended. The Two Witnesses (144 000) are sealed at the Out Pouring of the Holy Spirit, they work for 3.5 years, they are killed by the beast that ascends from the abyss, they are dead for 3.5 days, they are resurrected, and then ascend to heaven:
7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.
10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.
11 And after three days and an half the spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.
12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.
Another interesting fact about Moses, Elijah and Christ is that they represent the birthright of the patriarchs. The birthright which was passed down from a father to the eldest son was comprised of three parts: the priesthood, the rite to rule over his family, and a double portion of the material inheritance. Jacob divided the birthright among three of his twelve sons: Levi was given the priesthood, Judah the rite to rule, and Joseph got the double portion of his possessions. From these three sons, whose children became three of the twelve tribes of Israel, came the model priest (Moses from the Levites), king (Christ from the tribe of Judah), and prophet (Elijah from the tribe of Manasseh, one of the sons of Joseph). The double portion represented the prophetic gift. Elisha (also from Manasseh) requested a double portion of the spirit of Elijah:
2 Kings 2:9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
In the Two Witnesses (144 000), the birthright comes together again. During the 3.5-year period, they will act as priests, mediating between man and God:
Rev 8:5 And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.
They will also be prophets, conveying the word of God to the people on Earth.
Rev 10:11 And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.
During the Millennium, they will rule as kings, having access to the books of heaven, and revealing to all inquirers information about the judgment of God with respect to individuals inquired about:
Rev 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Today God is looking for people He can seal with the threefold gift of priest, prophet and king, the patriarchal birthright. Are you committing your all to Him?
