Chapter 15 The Bride of Christ
We met her first in Rev 12, clothed with the sun, standing on the moon and a crown of twelve stars on her head:
Rev 12:1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
She represents God’s people through all of time on Earth, but the focus of Rev 12 is particularly at the end of time. The Bride of Christ, then, is not the church from all ages, but is the 144 000 (see chapter 9). She has prepared herself for the marriage with Christ. How did she prepare herself? She was granted her wedding garment. Her husband, Christ, gave her the wedding garment. Her wedding garment is the righteousness of the saints:
Rev 19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.
This passage is a sermon on righteousness by faith. It is not something we acquire, but is given to us by Christ. Our goodness, our righteousness, is a free gift from Christ that He paid for by His blood.
A look at the chronology of Rev 19 suggests that the marriage of the Lamb takes place before the Second Advent. The bride, the 144 000, ascend to heaven just before the Close of Probation. They have gone to heaven for two reasons: To witness to the impenitence of the unrighteous, and the persecutors of Gods people. God then executes the unrighteous by means of the Seven Last Plagues. After the Seven Last Plagues, the 144 000 praise God for taking His revenge on the unrighteous (Rev 19:1-4). The marriage of the Lamb then takes place. Beyond this point in the time of eternity, the 144 000 will always be with Christ. With the marriage consummated, Christ returns to Earth at the Second Coming, accompanied by His bride, the 144 000, described as the armies of heaven. He gathers together all the other living saints, and also resurrects the dead saints of all the ages, and takes them all to heaven, to the marriage feast of the Lamb.
The bride is the 144 000, and the rest of the saints are the guests at the marriage feast of the Lamb:
Rev 19:9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.
On the New Earth, all the saints will have plots of land outside of the New Jerusalem, but the 144 000 will have homes in the New Jerusalem, and stay with Christ all the time. The saints will come up to the City every Sabbath and new moon to worship God, but the 144 000 will be with Christ all time. The type of this is the Levites who lived in the cities all the time. They did not possess land. The 144 000 are priests, living in the New Jerusalem, not possessing land.
You are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb. You are either part of His bride, or an invited guest. Be ready for His plan for you to either be part of His bride, the 144 000, or part of the remnant, the other saints who keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus. Choose to accept Christ as the most important person in your life today.
