Lost Connection.

“I am the vine, you​ are​ the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much​ fruit; for without Me you can do​ nothing.” John 15:5

How many times have you been talking to someone when the call was lost for an unknown reason? And how many times have you lost an Internet connection? When this happens, it can be quite frustrating. Because our world revolves around a vast network of fiber optics, satellite, and Wi-Fi connections, when one of these is broken, it can result in total chaos!

I remember several years ago when I lived in Indiana, my family and I decided to go to Canada to visit my wife’s family, whom she hadn’t seen for many years. We packed up and headed out for the long drive, and like most people today, I relied heavily on my GPS to guide me to our destination. Then, after we arrived, the decision was made to visit some other family members in another part of the city.​

This was Toronto, Canada, which means a lot of concrete overpasses. We got to our destination, but when we were returning, we began to have issues. As always, I’d punched in the home address, but as we drove under all those concrete overpasses, our GPS device lost its connection to the satellite, rendering the directions useless.​

Normally, this isn’t a big deal since the GPS signal will reconnect once it gets a clear path to the satellite. However, my problem was it lost its connection as we approached our exit, causing me to miss an important turn altogether. Yes, we were only lost for a short time until the device regained its connection, but it had to recalculate the route to guide us back home, adding several extra miles to our trip.

I couldn’t help but think about this while contemplating my walk with God. So many times, I’ve taken my eyes off God for just a moment, only to find that I’ve missed an exit that would have led me to a much better outcome. God is our “satellite,” and we must stay connected to Him. How important it is to keep John 15:5 fresh in our minds. He is the vine, and we are merely the branches. Without Him, we can do nothing.​

How many times have you broken your connection with God? If we lose our connection with Christ, problems will surely follow. To keep our connection, we must maintain a close relationship with Christ. He asks for our complete devotion to Him—and what better option do we have? The words of Paul in Hebrews 4:15–16 contain a great promise to anyone who will receive it: “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us, therefore, come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
