Doreen Virtue:
What’s the difference between new age teachings about positive thinking such as the “law of attraction,” compared to Christianity’s emphasis on faith and hope?
The big difference is that the New Age teaches that your thoughts create your reality. If you have a positive thought, you attract abundance and a positive outcome. If you have a negative thought, you attract negativity.
The new age teaches that we are the creators. This puts a lot of pressure on people to always stay positive. It creates a phobia of potentially hearing any bad news. It also makes for superficial relationships, since you’re not allowed to admit that you have any problems because that would be negative and you might attract something negative according to the new age.
Biblical Christianity, in contrast, acknowledges that God is the Creator. He creates reality. Our thoughts don’t create reality. For example, we could think about creating a planet all day long, yet we could never actually create a planet. Only God can.
Christianity means having faith, hope, joy, and encouragement in Jesus Christ. He is our reason for all of our hopes. Our hope is not in ourselves, or our thoughts, our hope is in Jesus.
Being positive is great, but not for the reasons of trying to “manifest.“ We have a joyful positive outlook, because we trust God, we know where we’re going, and we’re grateful that we believe in the Gospel that Jesus is fully God and fully man, and that he lived a sinless life, and was willing to die on the cross to take the punishment for the wrath for the sins that we’ve all committed.
We’re joyful because we’ve been reconciled with our Heavenly Father God, we’re indwelled with the Holy Spirit, we read our Bibles daily, we enjoy fellowship with other believers, we sit under faithful pastors, and God gives us strength and wisdom.
