Dear Father,

For a long time, I have been troubled by how Abigail who referred to her husband, Nabal, as a fool was described as wise. She said, “Nabal is his name, and folly is with him.” How does wisdom come from publicly insulting the head of the family?

I looked into the cause: Nabal’s foolish and evil behavior; her motive: to prevent bloodshed and honor God’s purposes; and the effect: lives were spared, David was kept from sin, and God Himself judged Nabal. And I concluded that, indeed, she was wise.

This illustration speaks to people in abusive relationships, marriages, or life-threatening situations who have upheld the idea that it is Christlike to hold their peace at all times and not seek help outwardly even when their lives are threatened inwardly, for fear of being judged by the church.

I have learned that wisdom is not flattery at the cost of truth, nor is it silence that enables destruction. Wisdom is revealed in fulfilling Your will and purposes. Abigail was termed wise when she restated the obvious. I believe that in matters of life and death, wisdom is found in calling a spade a spade.
