A Bondservant of Jesus Christ
Philippians 1:1
“Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ…”
Paul does not introduce himself as an apostle, scholar, or leader, but as a bondservant—a willing slave of Christ. The word means one who belongs entirely to another. Paul understood that his life was no longer his own; he had been bought by the blood of Jesus (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).
In the Old Testament, a bondservant chose lifelong service out of love for his master (Exodus 21:5–6). In the same way, believers do not serve Christ out of fear, but out of love and gratitude for the One who first loved us.
Even Jesus took “the form of a bondservant” (Philippians 2:7), humbling Himself in perfect obedience to the Father. Our calling follows His example: not to seek our own will, but His.
To be Christ’s bondservant is not bondage—it is freedom. We are freed from sin so that we may belong to Him (Romans 6:22). True joy is found not in owning our lives, but in surrendering them.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You bought me with Your blood. I am not my own. Teach me to walk in humble obedience, to love Your will, and to serve You with joy all my days. Amen.
