COMFORTABLE LIES
How Fear of Death Fuels Deception and Why Scripture Calls Us Back to Resurrection Hope

Scripture reveals that many prefer comforting illusions over uncomfortable truth, especially concerning death. The Bible warns that fallen humanity naturally resists truth that humbles pride or dismantles tradition.

Instead of accepting God’s clear testimony that “the dead know nothing” (Ecclesiastes 9:5), many cling to teachings that soften the reality of death by imagining continued consciousness or activity beyond the grave.

Paul explains this tendency plainly: “They did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved…God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie” (2 Thessalonians 2:10–11). When truth is rejected, deception fills the vacuum, not because God desires it, but because people choose what feels reassuring over what is true. Death, as Scripture presents it, strips humanity of control, awareness, and merit. It leaves only hope in the resurrection. That hope requires of the living: faith in Jesus, patience in His service and submission to God’s Commandments, qualities many resists.

Religious systems that teach immediate reward or punishment after death, capitalize on this fear. By presenting death as a conscious transition rather than an unconscious sleep, fear becomes a powerful motivator. Scripture warns against precisely this kind of manipulation: “Through fear of death [people] were all their lifetime subject to bondage” (Hebrews 2:15). Where ignorance replaces biblical understanding, fear thrives and fear becomes a tool of control.

Jesus, by contrast, spoke truthfully about death, calling it sleep, and directing hope not to rituals, payments, or intermediaries, but to His return and the resurrection (John 11:11–14; John 5:28–29).

The biblical gospel does not exploit fear, it destroys it, by anchoring hope in Christ alone.
