Pause to Help.

“But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” Hebrews 13:16
When was the last time you helped someone who was in need? When was the last time you stepped out of your comfort zone and put someone else's well-being before your own?
It's not always in my character to help others. I can get so busy that I just don't have the time to stop and lend help to a needy individual. I know because I've passed up multiple opportunities in my rush to accomplish an errand or a pressing job. May the Lord forgive me for those lost opportunities.
I praise Him for the occasions He has given me, though. Let me share one of them with you. Fridays are always a busy time for most of us who work here at 3ABN. It's our day off, so most of us use it to get our personal business done. On this particular Friday, my family and I were at the bank's drive-through window, and while I waited for the teller to take care of me, I noticed a lady across the street at a convenience store struggling with a flat tire. As we finished up, I told my wife, "I need to help that lady."
When I approached her and asked if I could help, her face lit up. "Yes, please!" she replied. Soon I discovered that she was headed to Tennessee from Springfield, Illinois, with her small child and still had a long way to go. But not only was her tire flat, her spare doughnut tire was soft and needed to be aired up, also. I'm happy to say that I carry an air compressor with me, so I was able to air up her spare, too. She was so thankful I'd stopped to help her, and I told her that God always puts us in the right place, at the right time. Then I assured her that I would be praying for a safe and uneventful trip to her destination.
That was the highlight of my day. I got to see someone's face beaming with hope and happiness, just because I took the time to help her. I think of Matthew 25:31-46, where Jesus spoke about judging the righteous and unrighteous. He says that when the righteous feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit the sick and those in prison, we are doing it to Him; but the unrighteous refuse to do these things. What is the difference between these two groups? One is humble, caring, and loving, while the other thinks only of themselves and forgets about others.
Which group are you in? As you go through life, keep in mind Matthew 7:12, which says, "Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets."
