Partial Obedience Leaves Unfinished Work

Scripture

Joshua 15:63 (NKJV)
As for the Jebusites the inhabitants of Jerusalem the children of Judah could not drive them out but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem to this day

Do Not Make Peace With What God Said to Remove

Joshua chapter 15 outlines the inheritance of the tribe of Judah. It is a chapter filled with progress, promise, and possession. Yet it ends with a sobering statement. The people did not fully drive out the Jebusites from Jerusalem. What God commanded to be removed was tolerated instead.

This verse reveals an important spiritual warning. Partial obedience may look like success, but it leaves unresolved issues that can later become problems. The tribe of Judah gained much land, but unfinished obedience allowed an enemy presence to remain within their territory.

God’s commands are always purposeful. When He tells His people to remove something, it is for protection, purity, and long term peace. Allowing compromise often leads to future conflict. What is not dealt with early can grow stronger over time.

For believers today, Joshua 15 reminds us to examine areas where we may have stopped short of full obedience. God does not call us to manage sin or coexist with compromise. He calls us to trust Him fully and obey completely. True freedom and peace come when we allow God to finish His work in us.

Reflection Questions

1. Are there areas of partial obedience in my life that God is calling me to address

2. Have I allowed compromise to remain where God asked for removal

3. What step of complete obedience is God inviting me to take

Prayer

Lord God, search my heart and reveal any area where I have settled for partial obedience. Give me the courage to trust You fully and remove anything that does not honor You. Help me to walk in complete obedience so that Your peace and purpose may be fully established in my life. In Jesus name, Amen.
