THREE ANGELS BROADCASTING NETWORK DEVOTIONAL
God Works Things Out.

“Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: ‘I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you by the way you should go.’” Isaiah 48:17
My grandmother was a Russian Orthodox believer, and every day she would bow forty times during her prayers, believing the Lord needed as much from her. When I was a young boy, she showed me her Bible, and although she didn’t read it herself, she treated it with great respect and kept it as a shrine. Later, I found a Bible for sale on the counter in a bookstore and spent a whole week’s salary to make it my own.
When I enlisted for military duty, I was assigned to a tank battalion, but the rigorous training affected my health, and I ended up in the infirmary. They quickly concluded I was unsuitable for this kind of service and transferred me to a medical school to become a doctor.
My mother came to see me, and soon after she arrived, she fell sick and had to go home urgently. She prayed I would go with her, and oddly enough, the authorities allowed it, so I suddenly got a seven-day vacation. But when I returned to my unit, my mother was despondent. I was her only guardian, so she prayed that the Lord would give me the chance to take care of her.
I prayed, too, and it was my first prayer ever! At the end of it, I said, “Lord, if You do this, I will go to church and live differently.”
When my mother asked the authorities to release me from military service so I could stay with her, the officer in charge drew up the documents in one day and sent them to the chief of staff. But that was just the beginning of the miracles, because my mother met the chief of staff on the street, even though she didn’t know him. As they talked, he told his assistant to send a message to my unit to dismiss me. But my mother wanted to end the matter as quickly as possible, so she hand-delivered the documents. In three short days, I was on my way home.
Soon, I heard about some Bible courses being offered in the city, and I remembered my promise to God and eagerly joined in. I learned something new every day, but most importantly, I learned how to have personal conversations with Jesus Christ and listen for His answers in my heart.
I’ll never forget the day I was baptized in Russia’s beautiful Volga river. I was so happy that I ran back to the bus barefooted and jumped over the curb. However, when my feet hit the ground, I suddenly realized that there were shards of broken glass all around me. In fact, I had landed on the only patch of ground that was free of glass! Immediately, I thanked God for saving me from serious injury.
I attended church every week, prayed with my fellow believers, studied the Holy Scriptures with them, and watched God transform my character. I used to be a hot-tempered man, but now I have become calm and reasonable. Then God helped me find a wife in church, and we’ve been happily married for many years!
I have realized that the Bible is not a simple book of stories but a guide to action. My heavenly Father replaced the father who left our family when I was only ten years old, and I love the passages that contain His Fatherly advice. Proverbs 1:10 says, “My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent;” and Proverbs 3:5–6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
