THE ADVENT TRUTH
One day I was contemplating the following Scriptures. David, in Psalm 143, pours out his heart to God. He's depressed, because his enemies won't leave him alone. It's an I tense, heartfelt prayer for deliverance.
.
In the next Scripture of Matthew 26, Jesus tells His disciples that His soul is exceeding sorrowful, or depressed.
.
So here's the thing: if we struggle with depression or anxiety, we're in good company. It's not a sin to be depressed. If it was, Jesus could not be our Savior. The key here is to not give up. Keep pouring your heart out to God. He's working for you, even and especially when you don't feel Him doing so.
.
In addition, depression isn't somethingost people can just snap out of. If you can't be nice in trying to encourage a depressed person, keep your mouth shut. You can door3 harm by telling them to snap out of it, or to just cheer up, or telling them it's just a mental thing they need to get over already. Follow the example of Jesus. You'll never find Him saying any of these to anyone.
.
Also, pay special attention to the quote at the end from the Spirit of Prophecy.
.
Psalm 143:4 AMPC
Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed and faints within me [wrapped in gloom]; my heart within my bosom grows numb.
.
Matthew 26:38 NKJV
Then He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me."
.
To all who are reaching out to feel the guiding hand of God, the moment of greatest discouragement is the time when divine help is nearest. They will look back with thankfulness upon the darkest part of their way. "The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly," 2 Peter 2:9. From every temptation and every trial He will bring them forth with firmer faith and a richer experience. - The Desire of Ages, p. 528.3
