Dear Father,
During the period when King Saul pursued David to take his life, he and his men camped at night, and the Scripture records that “David and Abishai came to the people by night; and there Saul lay sleeping within the camp…” The chapter reveals that You caused a deep sleep to fall upon them. My point, however, is how David himself was not asleep that night. Usually, the one who has something to lose should be the one who remains awake until he is certain of his safety.
I’m pondering how this truth cuts across various areas of our lives, how much we may have lost through negligence. When applied to our intended goals and the guarding of our treasures: these two are not mutually exclusive, for in protecting his life from Saul, he was also preserving his path to the throne.
This is in contrasts with the present day goal-getters who have not taken into account how protection and acquisition are what bring us to self-actualization. In protecting and stewarding what we already have, while reaching for what we do not, we obtain what we truly need. And sometimes, this process may cost us our beauty sleep.
It is said that greatness comes at a cost: while some prioritize their devotion with You to secure their destinies; some are committed to serious study to improve their grades; some invest wisely to secure their estates; while others sleep all through the night, because they have nothing to lose.
