What does YHWH require of thee?

Deuteronomy 10:12-13 - And now, Israel, what doth YHWH thy Elohim require of thee, but to fear YHWH thy Elohim, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve YHWH thy Elohim with all thy heart and with all thy soul, to keep the commandments of YHWH, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?

We might ask, what does YHWH require of me? What does YHWH want from me?

Before we look at that lets look at the word require in the Hebrew…
H7592 shaw-al - A primitive root; to inquire; by implication to request; by extension to demand

We see by the definition we see that YHWH inquires of, requests, or demands of. The scriptures indicate that YHWH probably would have demanded of because YHWH always wanted the children of Israel to obey his commandments.

So, what does YHWH demand from us….

1. Fear YHWH thy Elohim
2. Walk in all his ways
3. Love him
4. Serve YHWH thy Elohim with all thy heart and with all thy soul
5. Keep the commandments and statues of YHWH

Let’s start with fear. Fear YHWH doesn’t mean fear like what we would think but, in this scripture, it has a meaning of respect, reverence, awe.

As we read walk in all his ways we see, looking at the scripture in context, his ways he is speaking of here are keeping his statues and commandments.

To love him is sometimes a very generically understood and used term. It’s easy to say “I love you” to someone but love, especially with YHWH, should go beyond words. We love our children, but our love goes beyond just telling our children we love them. We care for, protect, nourish and provide for them. We should have that love and much more for YHWH who came and gave his life that we might be saved!

There are multiple scriptures that say, “all your heart and with all your soul”. YHWH wants us to love him with everything within us. We should not have any other gods before him. The third commandment say in Exodus 20:3-6 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Now, we might say we don’t have any gods before him but anything we put before YHWH is a god to us (aka money, spouse, children, employment, etc.).

One of the central principles of the Old Testament is that we keep his commandments. Look at Exodus 16:28 where YHWH admonished Moses for not keeping his commandments.

Exodus 16:28 - And YHWH said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?

YHWH also promises blessings to those who keep his commandments in Nehemiah 1:9 and others.

Nehemiah 1:9 - But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.

In the New Testament Messiah say…

Matthew 19:17 - And he said unto him, why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, YHWH: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

YHWH sees it so as important to keep his commandments that in Revelations that the dragon made war with her seed who keep the commandments of YHWH.

Revelation 12:17 - And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of YHWH, and have the testimony of YHWH the Messiah.

Here’s one more…
Revelation 14:12 - Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of YHWH, and the faith of YHWH Messiah.

So, we see in the following teaching just what YHWH requires of us.
