A Blessing Missed, A Lesson Learned
Scripture
“Then Isaac his father answered and said to him:
‘Behold, your dwelling shall be of the fatness of the earth,
And of the dew of heaven from above.’”
Genesis 27:39 (NKJV)
“What Happens When You Miss the Blessing?”
Genesis 27 is a chapter filled with emotion, deception, and deep longing. Jacob has just deceived his father Isaac and taken the blessing meant for his older brother Esau. When Esau discovers it, he weeps bitterly and pleads, “Have you only one blessing, my father?”
In response, Isaac speaks this lesser blessing over Esau:
“Behold, your dwelling shall be of the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above.”
It’s a blessing, but not the covenant blessing. Esau would survive, even prosper, but he would live outside the favor and purpose God had designed for Jacob’s lineage.
This verse is a powerful reminder:
Earthly blessings mean little without spiritual inheritance.
Esau had sold his birthright earlier for a bowl of stew (Genesis 25:33), and now he was feeling the full weight of that choice. His tears were real, but the consequences remained.
God is gracious and redemptive, but this passage challenges us to:
Value the spiritual over the temporary.
Guard our calling and inheritance in Christ.
Pursue God’s purpose over immediate satisfaction.
Reflection Questions
1. Have I ever traded long-term blessing for short-term comfort?
2. Do I truly value the spiritual inheritance I have in Christ?
3. What steps can I take today to live for God's eternal purpose?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the spiritual inheritance I have in Jesus. Forgive me for the times I’ve settled for temporary things and ignored the lasting blessings You’ve promised. Help me to guard what You’ve given me—my calling, my faith, my purpose. May I never take Your blessing lightly, and may I always live with eternity in view. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
