I am reading about Moses and his time in Egypt. He was trying to convince the Pharaoh of the time to let the Israelites go. So starts the famous plagues. While doing some deeper research, I had a couple questions come up.
1. How did the Egyptian magicians perform the first two miracle/plagues that Moses did?
2. What is the significance of the plagues? I mean, why frogs? Seems strange....
Here is what I found upon more study.
1. The magicians were able to mimic the miracle/plagues by rather slight of hand/chemistry/ manipulation or due to demonic spirits helping them along. It even might of been a bit of both. In my Bible, it states because of their "occult" which leads me to believe it was because of demonic forces that they dabbled in.
2. Each plague symbolized a god that the Egyptians worshipped.
Blood/ Nile River/ Hapi (god of the Nile) or Osiris (the Nile was believed to be his bloodstream).
Frogs/ Land and Homes/ Heqet (goddess of fertility/birth, depicted with the head of a frog).
Gnats and Lice/ Dust of the earth/Geb (god of the earth). The magicians failed here, could not replicate.
Flies/ Air and Houses/ Khepri (god of the morning sun/creation, often associated with beetles/insects).
Livestock/ Cattle and Horses/ Hathor (goddess of love/protection, depicted as a cow) or Apis (the bull god).
Boils/ Human skin/ Imhotep or Sekhmet (deities associated with healing and medicine).
Hail/ The Sky/ Nut (sky goddess) and Seth (god of storms and disorder).
Locusts/ Crops and Fields/ Min (god of agriculture/harvest) or Nepri (god of grain).
Darkness/ The Sun/ Ra (the sun god, the most powerful deity) and Thoth (moon god).
Firstborn/ Life succession/ Pharaoh himself (viewed as a living god) and his son.
So, I am asking myself...why target the deities of the Egyptians? Well, it is because God wanted to show them that not even their gods could reign over what he put into place. I am sure as each plague came through, the Egyptians prayed to these gods for relief and they received nothing but silence. When God said that he was to show them that he was "Lord", that meant even over those they saw as gods. He is the supreme being and that was made very obvious through the course of these plagues and through the exodus of the Israelites.
