Good morning to everyone. Grace and Peace be with you.
Yesterday was a productive doctor day. Not all the news was uplifting but it was educational. Prayers for discernment would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
My post yesterday compared the lack of chili beans in our chili to the lack of God in our Christian walk. As we were driving into town yesterday, another story that I heard on an old episode of Little House came to mind. You are a fanatic like me; you will know the episode instantly. It was titled: Stone Soup. In a nutshell, a story was told at school about a man who built a fire in the middle of town, filled his pot with snow and a stone he had in his pocket, after he had been turned away from every house in the town. Curiosity got the best of the town’s people and one by one they came out to see what he was doing. Each time he would remark that he was making stone soup. Every so often, he tastes it and then comments how much better it would be if … I had an onion…someone brought him an onion. If I had a potato…someone brought a potato. And so on. Soon, the townspeople had all contributed to the stone soup and made soup that everyone could enjoy. Whereas before, they each did not have enough to eat themselves.
If I remember right, it was a story to motivate the children to all pitch in and help their teacher, who had gotten sick. By showing them that nothing is impossible when you work together. Contributing what little you have with what little I have, we can make stone soup together.
There are so many lessons in this story, but the one I want to focus on rides the coattails of yesterday’s post. Just as beans make the chili whole; in order to have a fulfilling walk with Him, you need a community to bring you their little bit. Walking in Him, on your own, is like eating stone soup. But when you have a community that brings you what they have to offer, the feeling of His presence abounds to overflowing. It is at those moments when we can do it on our own that the enemy strikes the hardest, the quickest, and the most relentless. For he knows that if all you have is a stone in some hot water, you are going to be hungry and need something … anything … just to survive. However, if you have a community to bring a potato, a carrot, an onion … then you will all feast and he will flee.
Whether you choose to go to a local church or one you must drive to is completely up to you. Whether you choose to go weekly or just a couple of times a month is completely up to you. Just know that even if you do not engage much, a few items collected still make a soup better than just stone soup. Remember that the more you engage, the more you listen, the more you read, the more you pray, the more you live for Him … the healthier and more fulfilling your soup is going to be.
Be blessed.
**I lift up my eyes to the hills-where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. – Psalm 121:1
