Dear Father,

How do You choose men to go before other men? What was the qualifying attribute that distinguished Joseph from his brothers to become Governor of Egypt? A prophecy had already gone forth, that the children of Israel would be slaves in (Egypt) for 400 years, after which they would inherit the promised land. But how else could that prophecy be fulfilled while they still lived in their own land?

I wonder what it must have cost You to weave all these pieces together, or the stress it'd take to first inform Israel before sending one of his sons ahead to prepare the way for the rest. Yet You did not need Israel’s permission to fulfill Your plan; You needed a man whose heart You could trust.

What if Joseph, upon seeing his brothers, had imprisoned or killed them in vengeance? The entire future of a nation rested on the trust You had in one man’s heart. You said to Jeremiah, “I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, to give every man according to his ways.”

This story gives me a new view of life. The right prayer shouldn’t be to become a ruler or a king, but to possess a heart You can trust. Many would repay with arrows and swords, but You seek a man who understands the assignment, whose kingship retains love even after being crucified by his own people.
