Chapter 37 Deadly Wound
To match their understanding of the Year-Day principle connected to the 1260-day prophecy, Adventists see the beast as Catholicism that had its dominion removed by Napoleon in 1798, and the restoration of the wound in the rising of the Papal power in the past century. Having reinterpreted the 1260-day prophecy as contemporary, and rejecting the Year-Day principle for all prophecy except Dan 9, there must be another interpretation for the deadly wound. Let us look at the Scripture that refers to this in Revelation. In Rev 13 there are two references to a wound. In verse 3 we see one of the heads received a deadly wound which was healed:
3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
In verse 12 wound is mentioned again, not in terms of a head but rather the beast itself:
12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
In chapter 33 we saw that the seven heads are seven consecutive popes since Vatican Council I in 1929. In chapter 34 we saw that Rev 17 has a particular focus on Pope John Paul II. Another event that further amplifies the focus on John Paul II is the attempted assassination on his life on 13th May, 1981. He almost died bleeding out from an abdominal bullet wound. After several weeks in hospital he had fully recovered and was discharged. He served as pontiff for another 24 years. In his lifetime he popularised Catholicism amongst many non-Catholic nations, fulfilling the end of verse 3.
Does verse 12 refer to the attempted assassination of John Paul II? The language is very specific: a deadly wound that was healed. Rev 17 has a strong focus on John Paul II, making him represent the whole Papacy. In these terms it would seem right that verse 12 and verse 3 represent the same event. However, verse 12, even though it uses the same words, could be referring to the fall of the Papacy in line with the understanding of the Adventist pioneers – the fall (1798) and rise of the Papacy. Either interpretation does not take away from the impact of this prophecy.
Verse 14 also looks at the Papacy as a whole, in line with the pioneer Adventist understanding:
Rev 13:14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
Rev 13:3, 12 and 14 unite the heads with the leopard beast. This is important because two other creatures of Revelation have the same seven heads since they are cohorts. The first is the dragon defined in Rev 12 and the third is the scarlet beast of Rev 17. The first and last of these three cohorts is not the Papacy, but the second one, the leopard beast is. The heads of the dragon do not belong to the dragon, neither do the heads of the scarlet beast belong to it. Rev 17 indicates that the beast itself is the eighth king, but the seven kings (heads) that reigned before the beast do not belong to the scarlet beast. This deadly wound helps us to identify the heads of the leopard beast as belonging to the beast – the Papacy.
Adventists see the descending of the beast of Rev 17 into the abyss as the same occurrence – the fall (1798) and rise of the Papacy, where they interpret the scarlet beast as being the Papacy. We have seen in chapter 35 that the scarlet beast is the Jesuit Order. When and how did the Jesuit Order go into the abyss? They were meddling in the politics of European nations resulting in them being banned in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1773 Pope Clement XIV banned them from the Holy See. They went underground, still operating in China, Russia, Prussia and the USA. These events limited their influence and they were driven into the abyss as it were. In 1814 Pope Pius VII restored them to their previous status, allowing them to ascend from the abyss. The texts in Revelation 17 that refer to this are:
8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.
11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.
Pope Francis brought this prophecy to a partial fulfillment in that he became pope, and many people admired him and followed him. I believe the Jesuits will still play a greater role in the end-time events which I will elaborate on in the next chapter.
God bless you as we explore these concepts and as you prepare your heart and mind for these events.
