Marking the Moment
Scripture
“And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel.”
Genesis 35:15 (NKJV)
“Back to Bethel”
Jacob had been on a long, winding journey—filled with mistakes, wrestlings, fear, and family trouble. But in Genesis 35, God calls him to return to a special place: Bethel, the house of God. It was the place where, years earlier, God appeared to him in a dream when he was running from his brother Esau.
Now, after decades of growth and hardship, God speaks to him again, confirms his new identity as Israel, and reaffirms the covenant. What does Jacob do?
He names the place Bethel—again.
He marks the moment where God spoke.
Jacob didn’t want to forget what happened. He didn’t want to move forward without worship. So he did what we all need to do when we encounter God in a real way:
He made it a place of remembrance.
This verse reminds us:
Sometimes God calls us back—not to repeat the past, but to remember His promises.
We need spiritual markers in our lives to remind us who we are and who God is.
Every time God speaks—mark it, remember it, and worship.
Reflection Questions
1. Where has God met me in the past? Have I taken time to mark it and remember it?
2. Am I living like someone who’s had a personal encounter with God?
3. What can I do today to honor and remember the faithfulness of God in my journey?
Prayer
Lord God, thank You for every Bethel moment—those sacred times when You spoke to me, changed me, or reminded me who I am in You. Help me to never forget those places. Let my life be full of worship and remembrance, always pointing back to Your grace and faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
