It’s Not Me, It’s God
Scripture
“So Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, ‘It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.’”
Genesis 41:16 (NKJV)
Giving Credit Where It’s Due
After years of betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment, Joseph finally stands before Pharaoh—the most powerful man in Egypt. This is his moment to speak, his chance to prove himself. But instead of boasting in his own ability, Joseph says:
“It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.”
This is remarkable. Joseph could have used this moment for self-promotion, but he chose God-exaltation instead.
Joseph understood something we all need to remember:
Every gift we have is from God.
Every opportunity is God-given.
Every result worth having comes from His hand.
Joseph’s humility opened the door for God’s power to shine through him. And because Joseph pointed Pharaoh to God, he positioned himself for divine favor and promotion.
This verse challenges us:
When the spotlight is on you, will you point it back to God?
Reflection Questions
1. Do I give God credit for my abilities and opportunities?
2. How do I respond when others praise my work or talent?
3. Am I living in a way that points people to God instead of to myself?
Prayer
Lord God, every ability I have comes from You. Forgive me for the times I’ve taken credit for what You’ve done. Teach me to humbly point people back to You in every success and opportunity. Let my life reflect Your glory, and may others see Your hand in all I do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
