Preparing for Your Purpose

Scripture

“So it shall be, when Pharaoh calls you and says, ‘What is your occupation?’”
Genesis 46:33 (NKJV)

God Prepares the Way

In this chapter, Jacob and his family are moving to Egypt to survive a famine, and Joseph is guiding them through the process. Before they meet Pharaoh, Joseph instructs his brothers on exactly how to answer a key question: “What is your occupation?”

On the surface, it seems like a small detail. But in reality, it’s part of a divinely orchestrated plan. Their answer—that they are shepherds—would place them in Goshen, a fertile land away from the Egyptian population, protecting them from cultural assimilation and giving them space to grow into the nation God had promised.

This reminds us:

God goes before us to prepare the way (Deuteronomy 31:8).

Even small instructions can have big implications for His plan.

When we listen to God’s guidance—through prayer, His Word, or godly counsel—He positions us for blessing and protection.

Joseph wasn’t just telling his brothers what to say; he was aligning them with God’s strategy for their future.

Reflection Questions

1. Am I paying attention to the details of God’s guidance in my life?

2. Do I trust that God is working behind the scenes to position me for His purpose?

3. How can I better prepare myself for the opportunities He’s placing before me?

Prayer

Lord God, thank You for preparing the way before me. Help me to hear and obey even the smallest instructions You give, knowing that they are part of a bigger plan. Align my words, steps, and actions with Your purpose so that I may walk in the place You’ve prepared for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
