Chapter 39 The Great Red Dragon
There is nothing ambiguous about who the dragon is. Revelation makes it quite clear in two places:
Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Rev 20: 2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
Who is Satan? Here is a story that will give perspective to the who and what of this dragon:
When God created the angelic host, before this World was created, He made a particularly beautiful and handsome angel with wisdom to lead the angels. His name was Lucifer which meant bearer of light, or morning star. He ranked third in the universe with only God, and His Son, above him. The Son of God existed before the angels, and played a part in their creation. He loved the angels and associated with them. In fact, to the angels He was an angelic leader like Lucifer, just above Lucifer in rank.
At this point in time (whatever that means in the heavenly realm) there was no sin, and the angelic society lived in perfect harmony. Then Lucifer grew jealous of Michael (the Son of God) and aspired to outrank Him and to be next in rank to God. He discussed this issue with the angels, and many of them had sympathy with his issues toward Michael:
Isa 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
Eze 28:11 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.
13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
To quell this emerging uprising, God called together all the angelic host and made a revelation to them. He told them that Michael was not an angel, but was His very own begotten Son. Michael was the divine Son of God, not a created angel. This strategy of God worked for a while, but Lucifer liked the idea of being ranked above Michael, and fueled the uprising again.
This time in the full knowledge of Who Michael is, there was nothing God could do but to cast Lucifer and all his loyalists out of heaven. Reading wider from the above two passages, this is shown. Revelation 12 introduces the dragon as having been cast out of heaven with one third of the angelic hosts. This is not an indication of the throwing out of heaven in the future still, but rather just part of the introduction of the dragon as a role-player in the drama of Rev 12. The woman is also introduced as God’s people throughout time, but the drama of Rev 12 is still in the future:
3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.
The dragon still had a prime jealousy and hatred toward the Son of God, and with the incarnation it was his supreme purpose to harm Christ, or deceive Him. He wanted to destroy His role in the salvation of man. Christ’s mission was a success, and He ascended to heaven 40 days after His resurrection, out of reach of the blood-thirsty dragon. Christ’s death, resurrection and ascension was a conquering blow to the dragon.
(See chapter 32 on cohorts, 33 for seven heads and 38 for 10 horns.)
After the ascension, the only way in which the dragon could now overcome the triumph of God and Christ was to assure that there would be no one ready for the Second Advent of Christ. He persecuted the followers of Christ, then he resorted to corrupting their faith. When the Roman Empire found that they could not annihilate Christianity by persecution, the Emperor, Constantine in the fourth century, unified the heathen beliefs with the Christian faith. He changed the birthday of the sun god to the birth of Christ – December 25. The Passover feast was replaced by the rituals of the goddess of fertility – Ishtar (Easter). The weekly day of the worship of God was changed from Sabbath (Saturday) the seventh day of the week to Sunday, the day of worship of the sun god. The three heathen gods – Baal, Ashtoreth and Tammuz – became God the Father, God the Holy Spirit and God the Son, respectively. Trinitarianism replaced the belief in God the Father and Christ His Son. The Arian tribes rejected this change, and they were annihilated because of that.
Trinitarianism takes away the personalities of God and His Son. It claims that Christ was always present with the Father, and the term “begotten” is not real, but role-playing. Antichrist is defined in the Bible as rejecting the notion that God has a real begotten Son:
1 John 2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
Trinitarians literally believe in another God than the real Creator God. That is why the First Angel’s message calls us back to worshipping the true God and Creator.
The reformers restored many of the doctrines that were lost with the apostatising of Christianity. However, none of them restored the worship of the one true God and His Son. With the event of Adventism, the trinity was done away with as a doctrine. This remained so for the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. Yet Lucifer succeeded in infiltrating Adventism with Masons and Jesuits, and by 1980 the Trinity was accepted as a fundamental doctrine of the SDAs. Satan hates Christ and has succeeded in the apostacy of all Christianity.
God has trumped Satan by starting a new reformation amongst Adventists in the past decade. More and more Adventists reject the false gods of the Trinity and are worshipping the real Creator and His Son. This has enraged Satan, and there is now a general disfellowshipping of all Adventists that reject the trinity. The Pope is also alarmed at the revival of Arianism.
When God pours out His Spirit in the Latter Rain, 144 000 apostles will be sealed, and not one of them will be a Trinitarian. This event is the drama of Rev 12. Satan (which means accuser or adversary) will vehemently object to God taking away from mortals their propensity to sin. This concept is strongly supported by the type in Joshua the High Priest in Zechariah 3:
1 And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.
2 And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?
3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel.
4 And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.
5 And I said, Let them set a fair mitre upon his head. So they set a fair mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the LORD stood by.
This objection is represented by war in heaven in Rev 12:
7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
Satan then tries to persecute the 144 000, but they enjoy God’s protection:
13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.
14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
In chapters 20 and 21 we saw how God protects His servants.
When Satan sees that he cannot touch the 144 000, he turns on their converts during the 3.5 years between the Outpouring of God’s Spirit, and the Close of Probation.
The Great Red Dragon is Satan that has had a particular hatred for Christ because He outranked him, doing all in his power to have God’s plan of salvation fail. Yet God prevails and will do so to the end. At the Second Advent, the dragon will be thrown into the abyss (chapter 36). God will triumph. Choose God, then you will be on the winning side. It may just be that you will be chosen by God to complete His work as one of the 144 000 apostles.
