Growing Pains

By Deborah Shaffer February 4th, 2026

“Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:6

Have you ever experienced growing pains? I remember that when my son was growing up, he had horrible growing pains. He would cry out in pain—usually at night, when he was trying to rest. I was sure that he had some horrible disease and was in need of medical attention. My calmer, more logical husband knew what was happening, though, and tried to calm my fears. He was right, but isn’t it the same in our Christian walk with the Lord?

Recently, I have been going through such spiritual reconstruction that I’ve experienced true spiritual pain as God has revealed an area in my life that is not pleasing to Him. I knew it was there, but my flesh had a death-hold on it and refused to let go. As long as I can remember, it had been a stronghold in my life. I did not have the power to release it—until He forced me to loosen my grip. But even though I’m seeing a glimpse of victory today, I know I must be on constant guard against it raising its ugly head again.

This past week has been spiritually humbling, and it hurt; but I know there are times of intense pain as we experience new revelations from God and discover what He is trying to accomplish in our lives. Change, persecution, sickness—anything outside of our “normal” can bring on growing pains. But what happens after the pain ends? We see growth. We see things in a new light. Things that may have been obstacles are now past, and we realize that we have overcome what we thought was unbearable. We are stronger, and more powerful. A new vision, a new opportunity takes their place.

So don’t fight the pain—let it take you to your knees, instead, and ask God to use it for His purpose. Ask Him to show you His plan for this difficult, painful time in your life. Ask Him to carry you through, and rest on Him. He is more than able to bring you through the pain into an exciting and new experience!
