Matthew 1
Our Jewish Messiah
People often ask what the difference is between the four Gospel accounts of Jesus's life and ministry. In the case of Matthew, we are being presented with the Jewish Messiah. The figure promised as early as in Genesis 3. The embodiment of perfection, of sacrifice and the fulfillment of thousands of years of prophecy.
Matthew was an important part of Jesus's ministry. A Jewish tax collector, hated by his own people. And he records the genealogy of Jesus going back to Abraham. The genealogy would have been of utmost importance to the early Jews. Jesus's lineage would have been one of the bases of His claim to be Messiah.
It was important because their Messiah was to be of the line of David, and if there was question about his lineage, nothing else He taught would have mattered. And within the lineage there are a number of interesting inclusions in the Messiahs ancestry. Typically, females were not included in long lists of ancestors. But here, that is not the case.
Matthew chapter 1 verse 5 reads
[5] Salmon fathered Boaz by Rahab, Boaz fathered Obed by Ruth, and Obed fathered Jesse.
Not only was Rahab included in this list, a harlot, or prostitute by trade but she was the great, great grandmother of King David. And in addition, the Moabitess, Ruth also made it into Jesus's ancestry. We could spend time discussing the aberrent nature of these people, but we won't.
Perhaps it is a bit of including those who would find pride in their list of relatives and reminding them that we are all sinners. If the life of a prostitute can be changed so radically that she becomes great grandmother to the Messiah we all have hope.
There are certainly some rogues in this list but that's another reason proving the veracity of Scripture. The fact that some of these so called undesirables made it on the list proves that this isn't a fictional list meant to impress Jewish scholars, it was 100% real.
Everything we find written in Matthew is from the viewpoint of a Jewish man who had no reason to fabricate anything about Jesus. As we read we are going to see references to prophecy from the Tenach, the early form of the Jewish scriptures incorporating the books of history, prophecy and poetry. In our journey through Matthew we are going to see it all.
