Another Gospel
Galatians 1:6-9 (6) I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: (7) Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. (8) But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. (9) As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
Let’s break down these scriptures…
Verse 6 says “I marvel…”. The word marvel is from the Greek number G229 and means to wonder, by implication to admire.
Apostle Paul was wondering why the believers in Galatians where “so soon removed” from the truth that they were given to something that was not true. The word soon is the Greek number G5030. It means briefly, that is, (in time) speedily, or (in manner) rapidly. The word removed the Greek number G3346 - to transfer, that is, (literally) transport, (by implication) exchange, (reflexively) change sides, or (figuratively) pervert.
So, if we read it from the Greek. It would say, "I marvel that you were so speedily transferred from Him that called you into the grace of Messiah and to another gospel."
As we continue reading, we see in verse 7 it says, "There be some that troubled you." That word trouble which is the Greek number G5015, and it means to stir or to agitate. It also says, "and would pervert the gospel of Messiah." Now that word "pervert" The Greek number G3344 and it means to turn across, that is, to transmute or figuratively to corrupt.
The next two verses are very important. It says: "But though we, which means the Apostles or even an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed." And it emphasizes it again in verse 9 “as we said before, So say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that which you have received, let him be accursed." Now that word accursed is the Greek number G331, and it means to ban or concretely excommunicate.
So, we see in these scriptures how strongly Paul felt about another gospel being preached to these believers. They already had the true gospel, but Paul was afraid that other believers were going to come in and try to teach them another gospel. Paul understood that there should only be one gospel, the true gospel, preached to these believers and this is stressed in verses 8 and 9.
Finally, we know how strongly YHWH felt about adding to or taking away from his word. As we see in the following scriptures.
Revelation 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
Deuteronomy 4:2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
Deuteronomy 12:32 What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.
Proverbs 30:6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
Revelation 22:18-19 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
