A VERY JEWISH CHRISTMAS
Matthew 1:18-25

Matthew chapter 1 verses 18 through 25 round out the first chapter of the First Gospel. Curiosity led me to investigate in verse 18 how a group of people who were investigating Mary's mystery pregnancy came to the conclusion that she had been impregnated by the Holy Spirit. Now this may be too clinical in terms of study for a Bible study but was there a way to verify Mary's virginity same time investigating that she was pregnant and the answer is yes there was so why wasn't there more of an objection to Mary not being married to her future partner and yet being pregnant you have to understand that this happened occasionally in Mary's case this was a miracle of God overcoming her and conceiving a baby within her as prophecy dictated would happen. In other cases it was two betrothed individuals who were doing something they shouldn't have and the girl ended up pregnant.
We have to understand that at this time Joseph legally had the right to walk away and not be bound to marry her and since this was his first thought we know that Joseph was a righteous one.

So while he had every right to walk away, and was going to do so, it took the intervention of an angel to convince him that Mary hadn't cheated on him and that he should stay with her. How did so many miss his first arrival? Consider this: a local virgin is found to be pregnant as predicted 800 years before in Isaiah. The test they performed showed she had been with no man so why weren't more Jews excited?

The answer is, some were ready. Most were not. The elderly man and the prophetess recognize Jesus as the Messiah when he's brought into the temple on the 8th day for his circumcision. Some of these Jews pushed the very idea of a Messiah arriving to the back of their minds because they were dealing with everyday life. They had known the time period and location of the Messiah's birth for 800 years at least. Note that Matthew makes sure to quote Isaiah, one of the most beloved prophets in Jewish history. So why weren't more people ready? I believe I have the answer.

As Christians we see the prophecies of his miraculous arrival in Bethlehem, the day and location of his birth and sometimes some of us begin to think maybe we are smarter than these Jews, or better than them in some way. We think to ourselves that we would never make a mistake like missing signs of the Messiah’s coming.

Before that thought coalesces in your brains ask yourself this, are you aware JESUS will be returning soon? Are you aware that there are many prophecies of both his first arrival as well as His second? Did you know these things are happening?

The Euphrates River is almost completely dried up?
That the noise of chains and moaning has scared off people near the Euphrates?
That the greenlight for the new temple to be built has been authorized?
That the heifers needed for the new temples dedication are available and the practice slaughter has already happened?
That portions of a sea is pouring forth water out from a desert location as prophecied years ago.
That mysterious sounds of trumpets blowing are being heard worldwide?

So let me ask you, are you ready for Messiah to come, or are you lost as to Bible prophecies including the ones I mentioned. Is everyday life causing you to put urgent spiritual matters into a less important role?

In my life, I'll be honest, there are many times I don't see from the spiritual side. I let doubt, fear and more slip in and rob me of victory in my walk with Jesus. All that does is hurt me and I'm doing what I can to change and trusting God for the rest.

Matthew 1:18-25

[18] Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit. [19] And her husband Joseph, since he was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. [20] But when he had thought this over, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. [21] She will give birth to a Son; and you shall name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” [22] Now all this took place so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled: [23] “Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a Son, and they shall name Him Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.” [24] And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, [25] but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he named Him Jesus.
