Dear Father,

Delilah said to Samson, “Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength lieth, and wherewith thou mightest be bound to afflict thee.” I am amazed at how she used every clue he gave her to try to destroy him, yet after so many betrayals, he still chose to tell her the truth.

Like every other strong, accomplished, goal-oriented person, none of us are without the need for companionship. But how often are we surrounded by well-meaning ones? One of the subtle dangers of vulnerability is the illusion that time can transform an enemy into a friend. I was intentional with the highlights above to show that victims of unfriendly friends aren’t necessarily weak or unaccomplished people. Perhaps we all have stories to tell about trust and betrayal, but when I look closely, I also see a story about strengths and weaknesses.

The strength of a man isn’t revealed in his most vulnerable state -- his weaknesses are. And often, we become so focused on building our strengths that we neglect our weaknesses, forgetting that the path toward developing strength isn’t necessarily the path toward weakening weaknesses. Samson could manage his strengths, but he couldn’t manage his weaknesses, and his weaknesses ultimately led to his downfall.

Father, teach me to guard my weaknesses.
