THE ADVENT TRUTH
Jesus didn’t come to erase the Ten Commandments — He came to fulfill them, magnify them, and write them into the hearts of His followers. From the beginning of His ministry, Jesus preached obedience to God’s Law as the evidence of true love and discipleship. He said plainly, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law… but to fulfill” (Matthew 5:17). And then He warned, “Whosoever… shall break one of these least commandments… shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven” (v. 19). The commandments were not Jewish laws — they were God’s eternal standard, rooted in His unchanging character.
When Jesus told the rich young ruler, “If thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments” (Matthew 19:17), He listed those from the Ten Commandments — proving their ongoing authority. And when He declared, “The sabbath was made for man” (Mark 2:27), He didn’t say for “the Jews,” but for mankind — for all creation. He also called Himself Lord of the Sabbath (Mark 2:28), showing He has authority over it because He is the One who made it (John 1:1–3).
Here’s the part many skip: Jesus didn’t just teach the law — He gave it. When He said, “Before Abraham was, I AM” (John 8:58), He claimed the very name spoken from the burning bush in Exodus 3:14 — “I AM THAT I AM.” The same I AM who delivered Israel, who thundered the Law from Sinai, who wrote the Ten Commandments with His own finger (Exodus 31:18) — that was Christ Himself.
So when critics say, “Jesus never commanded the Sabbath,” they’re missing the truth: Jesus is the Author of the Sabbath (Genesis 2:1–3) and the voice that proclaimed the Fourth Commandment (Exodus 20:8–11). He didn’t give a new Law — He restored it to its rightful place. The cross did not delete God’s commandments — it exposed how serious sin really is.
Obedience doesn’t save us — Jesus does. But the saved obey (John 14:15). In the final conflict of earth’s history, the great issue of worship calls the world back to honoring the Creator (Revelation 14:7)… including the sign of His authority — the Sabbath (Ezekiel 20:12, 20).
