Appropriately, Matthew embedded Jesus’ birth into three biblical narratives. Jesus is “Immanuel,” the embodiment of God’s presence with His people. He is the new Joshua, bringing God’s people into the promised land. He is the new David, born in Bethlehem, the city of David.
