When Everyone Does What Is Right in Their Own Eyes
Scripture
Judges 17:6 (NKJV)
In those days there was no king in Israel everyone did what was right in his own eyes
The Danger of Self Directed Living
Judges chapter 17 marks a shift in the book. Instead of focusing on external enemies, the narrative now exposes internal spiritual decay. The chapter tells the story of Micah, who creates his own system of worship, makes household idols, and appoints his own priest. Religion continues, but reverence for God’s Word is absent.
Verse 6 explains the deeper issue. There was no king in Israel, and everyone did what was right in his own eyes. This does not merely describe political absence. It reflects spiritual disorder. When God is not recognized as King, personal preference replaces divine authority.
Micah believed he was honoring God, yet he ignored God’s commands. Sincerity replaced obedience. Personal interpretation replaced revealed truth. The result was spiritual confusion masked as devotion.
For believers today Judges 17 reminds us that faith cannot be shaped by personal opinion. When individuals define truth for themselves, spiritual drift follows. God’s Word must remain the standard, not feelings, culture, or convenience.
True freedom and stability come when God reigns as King in the heart. Without His authority, spiritual life becomes self directed and unstable.
Reflection Questions
1. Are there areas where I have substituted personal preference for God’s truth
2. Do I consistently submit my decisions to God’s Word
3. Is God clearly recognized as King over my life
Prayer
Lord God guard my heart from shaping faith according to my own opinions. Help me to submit fully to Your Word and recognize You as King over every part of my life. Teach me to follow Your truth rather than my own understanding. In Jesus name Amen.
