Dear Father,
I came across a scripture that says, “Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” This describes the possible implication that doing good can lead to weariness. I believe this weariness becomes a reality when we are told to do good but not given a complete perspective of what doing good entails; when we are not told that even the reaping of good has its own season.
So, we start off doing good but later drift into less compelling actions with greater tendencies for immediate reward. For as long as our good seeds seem to take forever in the soil, we are tempted to embrace a fast-growing tree, regardless of its moral standing. Because the intention was never entirely to do good; we embraced this path because we were told that doing good pays, and when it doesn’t, we seek and pursue what does.
Isn’t this the mindset that has gained fame in our world? One rarely spoken of, yet greatly accepted! For if we all did good, why does the world suffer from so much evil? Why has finding honest people suddenly become like seeking out angels? Why would we rather be accepted by the majority than stand alone for what’s right? Why has weariness restrained the lifestyle of goodness?
If it were a spirit, I’d pray for an impartation of good in our world but sadly, it is an action that requires our free will.
