Venomous Words
When you’re frustrated or angry with someone, it’s easy to lash out and say mean things. But before you speak one word, stop and think about the consequences. Remember that once those words leave your mouth . . . you can never take them back. Proverbs 18:21 tells us, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Words are powerful and can penetrate the heart as quick and deadly as a poisoned arrow. Lifetime friendships can be broken, and relationships destroyed in an instant by venomous words spat out in the heat of the moment. Not only will others be hurt by your sharp tongue, but you will have dishonored God. The Bible says in Matthew 12:36-37, “But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” That’s a very sobering thought when you think about how many times you’ve said things that you are not proud of. Every word that comes out of your mouth is important to God. Don’t let your pride get in the way of your pursuit of peace. Kind words can melt the heart of the toughest person, so think before you speak. Not only will you feel good for taking the high road, but you'll have the awesome feeling knowing that you honored God. When you feel the temptation to spew out venomous words, quickly pray for the Holy Spirit’s strength to stay calm and respond in a Christlike way. Unrestrained anger can lead to sin, so sometimes it’s just better to say nothing and simply walk away. Nothing will bring you greater peace than doing “the right thing.” Take biblical advice in James 1:19-20, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.” Text: 1 Peter 3:10, Proverbs 10:19, Matthew 15:11, Psalm 141:3
