God’s Last Call

By Lyudmila Myakunova

My parents worked a lot, so the neighbors would often watch me as I grew up in Russia. Once, as my Grandma Vera tucked me into bed, I glanced out and saw a beautiful starry sky. “Baba, is there a God?” I asked, but she didn’t answer.

After college, I married, and we had two children. But my husband worked as a ship navigator and was gone a lot, and when I found out he was being unfaithful, we separated.

Life became a lot harder. My son was often hospitalized with severe asthma and eventually was deemed disabled. Then my daughter began taking drugs. At work one day, I told a total stranger how my daughter had chosen a wrong path in life, and after listening attentively, she said, “You know, no one can help you with this. You need God. You need the Jesus Prayer.”

Then the telephone rang behind me, and when I turned back, the stranger was gone and no one had seen her leave.

I looked everywhere for this Jesus Prayer. I asked different priests, but no one knew about it. Then I got an invitation to a Bible course in my mailbox and noticed they had a professional psychologist giving lectures on parenting, so I attended and gleaned a lot of interesting information.

Later, when they gave me a Bible, I read it through the night looking for the Jesus Prayer. Since I didn’t find it, I asked the preacher to show me where it was, but he just told me to keep looking. I searched for a week and finally came back to confront him. “If you don’t show me right now where this prayer is, then take back your Bible because I don’t need it!” I exclaimed.

He opened my Bible to Luke 11 and showed me the prayer.

“This is it?” I asked. “The ‘Our Father?’”

“Yes,” he said. “This is the Jesus Prayer.”

I read the Gospel of Luke that night and couldn’t tear myself away. It was Friday night, and a baptism was scheduled for the following day. I wanted to take part but had no way to get there. Honestly, I didn’t have money for food, much less bus fare, so that morning, I said my first prayer. Lord, if you exist and want me to be baptized, then You need to help me find money for this trip.

That day was December 7, and the money for my son’s disability always came on the eleventh. But the doorbell rang and I heard, “Open up. I have your money!” How did God arrange for that? I marveled, since it was the first time I’d received it ahead of schedule.

Crying, I called my mother. “I’m going to be baptized today!” I said. “The Lord needs me!” and I was the first one there.

After my baptism, I met one of my daughter’s old friends—and that’s when I found out that she’d put the Bible course invitation in my mailbox. I felt guilty as I remembered how I’d rudely kicked her out of my house, convinced she was a bad influence because of her dysfunctional family background. Thankfully, she hadn’t become bitter but had quietly worked for my salvation instead.

I asked my prayer meeting group to pray for my son, and they taught me how to claim Bible promises as I prayed. I asked for his physical and spiritual healing in the name of Jesus and then forgot all about it—until it was time for his yearly disability evaluation.

When I asked if he’d made an appointment, my son answered, “What for? I haven’t had any more asthma attacks!” God had healed him, and soon he was baptized. Since then, he’s been healthy and was taken off the disability list.

I prayed for my daughter, too, and soon she was caught dealing drugs and imprisoned for seven-and-a-half years. Just two days after her arrest, the house where her friends were using drugs was raided, and later we discovered they all contracted HIV during those last two days from a contaminated needle!

All of them died, but my daughter survived, and I cried as I thanked the Lord for saving her life. After serving her time, she moved in with me and now works and has a normal life. My husband also went to prison but found the Lord there and was baptized. After his release, he began attending church, and our family is back together again.

I shudder at what might have happened to us if I had not responded to God’s call, “For He says: ‘In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in the day of salvation I have helped you.’ Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”

2 Corinthians 6:2.

Please don’t reject God’s call. Don’t miss that precious opportunity.
