THE MIRACLE OF JAILHOUSE ROCK

Many people think the miracle in Acts 16 was the earthquake. The chains breaking. The prison doors opening. But WHAT IF THE REAL MIRACLE WAS THAT NO ONE RAN? Think about it!

We often picture this story in a calm way. Paul and Silas singing softly in jail. A peaceful worship moment. But if we read carefully, THE SCENE IS PAINFUL.

Acts 16:22-23 NASB1995
[22] The crowd rose up together against them, and the chief magistrates tore their robes off them and proceeded to order them to be beaten with rods. [23] When they had struck them with many blows, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to guard them securely;

They were not lightly punished. They were SEVERELY FLOGGED. Their backs were torn open. Their bodies were weak. Then they were placed in the inner cell.

Acts 16:24 NASB1995
[24] and he, having received such a command, threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.

The inner cell was dark. It was deep inside. Their feet were locked in painful stocks. They could not move freely. THEY COULD NOT REST COMFORTABLY.

Now it was midnight. The smell. The darkness. The pain. What would we be doing?

Most of us would be crying. Complaining. Asking God why. But the Bible says something shocking.

Acts 16:25 NASB1995
[25] But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them;

They were praying. They were singing. Not after they were rescued. Not after they were healed. While they were still bleeding. CAN WE WORSHIP WHEN IT STILL HURTS?

Acts 16:26 NASB1995
[26] and suddenly there came a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison house were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were unfastened.

CHAINS FELL. DOORS OPENED. FREEDOM WAS RIGHT THERE. If that happened to you, would you run?

The jailer woke up. He saw the open doors. He knew Roman law. If prisoners escaped, the guard would be killed. He thought everything was lost.

Acts 16:27 NASB1995
[27] When the jailer awoke and saw the prison doors opened, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.

He was seconds away from ending his life. Then a voice cut through the darkness.

Acts 16:28 NASB1995
[28] But Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here!”

THEY STAYED. PAUL COULD HAVE WALKED OUT. He could have said, God opened the door, I am leaving. He could have let the man who locked him up face death.

But he understood something deeper. THE EARTHQUAKE WAS NOT ONLY ABOUT HIS FREEDOM. IT WAS ABOUT THE JAILER’S SALVATION.

The jailer rushed in and asked:

Acts 16:30 NASB1995
[30] and after he brought them out, he said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

Paul answered:

Acts 16:31 NASB1995
[31] They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

That same night, the jailer washed their wounds. He and his whole family believed. They were baptized. Joy filled that house.

THE REAL MIRACLE WAS NOT JUST OPEN DOORS. IT WAS CHANGED HEARTS.

We often pray, God get me out of this. Remove this pain. End this struggle.

SOMETIMES GOD SHAKES THE GROUND NOT TO MOVE YOU OUT, BUT TO BRING SOMEONE ELSE IN! WHAT IF OUR WORSHIP IN THE DARK IS WHAT SOMEONE ELSE NEEDS TO HEAR?

It is easy to sing when life is comfortable. It is easy to trust when there is no pressure.
But can we sing at midnight? Can we trust when your back is against the wall?

Paul and Silas show us that WORSHIP IN PAIN HAS POWER. OBEDIENCE IN SUFFERING CAN OPEN DOORS FOR OTHERS.

THE MIRACLE WAS NOT ONLY THAT CHAINS FELL. THE MIRACLE WAS THAT LOVE STAYED.
