Commissioned
"Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." (Matthew 28:19)
Scripture: Matthew 28:16-20
Song: "Mighty To Save"
In 2013, I had the privilege of seeing my son-in-law receive his formal commission as an officer in the United States Army. It was an inspiring experience to watch so many young men and women pledge their allegiance to their country and receive the challenge and responsibility of their commission. Those men and women were duty-bound to defend their nation with honor.
The United States Naval Institute website notes, "The commission binds both the officer to the state to serve lawfully and defend the Constitution." Being commissioned for a task is something to be taken seriously. Similarly, Jesus commissions His disciples just before ascending into heaven.
Commissioning is about responsibility. When we become followers of Jesus, our lives have purpose. We have responsibilities. Jesus made that clear before returning to His Father. Because of our faith in Jesus, we have the privilege of giving our whole lives to Him, making disciples of those around us and around the world. Is there anything more important than that? We have the opportunity to make a difference for Jesus by what we do, what we say, and how we act. It is our gift to Him who gave His life for us. What can we do today that demonstrates our faithfulness to our commission?
Father, thank You for sending Your Son to give me life and purpose. May I use the opportunities You give me to make a difference. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
