Stellar Mars

“He pours contempt on princes, and causes them to wander in the wilderness where there is no way; yet He sets the poor on high, far from affliction, and makes their families like a flock. The righteous see it and rejoice, and all iniquity stops its mouth.” Psalm 107:40-42

Once upon a time there was a Russian kitty whose owners gave her a real star name, Mars. She lived outside, but was always fed and watched over. She had a special insulated box to spend the night in, and lived with three other cats, who were treated no better and no worse. Their owners loved them because they were good at catching mice, and the four cats got along with each other quite well.

But Mars had an obstinate, and unbalanced character. Her nature was to suddenly and aggressively attack the family members, digging and biting their hands and ankles with her sharp fangs and claws. While she attacked all of them, the 8-year-old caught it the most. But he loved Mars very much, and tried to make friends with her by stroking her fur—only to have her dig her claws into both his hands.

Finally, the family council met and decided that Mars needed to go live somewhere else and took her five kilometers away. After three weeks, the scars on their hands and feet were almost healed, when the little boy walked out in the yard one day and shouted, “Mom, who is this?”

His mom walked out and saw him pointing in the direction of the trees.

“Oh, Mars is back!” she exclaimed as the cat walked through the bushes and across the backyard—meowing her complaints to the owners. She rubbed her thin body against their legs, purring as they scratched and petted her.

While Mars seemed to take offense at how she had been treated, she was obviously thankful to be back; and her owners repented of what they’d done to her, too. They took her back into their care, and ever since, Mars has been a most affectionate cat—and remains so to this day.

This is a story from my own life, of course, and I think it has a valuable lesson. I think we can say that God is like the loving masters in this parable. We should consider how we’ve behaved, and how it must seem to the heavenly council, before they make a final decision. May Jesus Christ become desirable to us, and may He completely transform our character and our entire life. “Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.” Jonah 3:10. “For God has committed them all to disobedience, that He might have mercy on all.” Romans 11:32.
