Forty days. Silence. Hunger. Preparation. But Lent didn’t begin that way. In the 2nd and 3rd centuries, Christians celebrated Easter, the resurrection of Jesus Christ but their fast was short. Sometimes just one or two days. Some fasted only on Good Friday. Others for a single week. There was no worldwide rule, only a growing desire to prepare. Then the number 40 began to echo through Scripture. Forty days in the wilderness. Forty days on Mount Sinai. Forty days on a journey of faith. By the 4th century, Christians everywhere were embracing 40 days before Easter. After Constantine the Great legalized Christianity in 313 AD, the Church became more organized. The First Council of Nicaea spoke of this 40-day season—not as something new, but as something already alive across the Christian world. Lent became a journey A time to repent. To pray. To fast.
