Come Out from Among them
Genesis 18:16-19:29
As we look at this week’s scripture, we see YHWH protecting Lot for Abraham’s sake (Verse 18:29).
YHWH said to Abraham that he was going to destroy Sodom. Abraham wanted YHWH to have mercy on Sodom because he knew there were righteous people there, including his nephew Lot. Abraham pleaded with YHWH that if there were 50 righteous people in the city, for him not to destroy it. YHWH said he would not destroy it if there were 50 righteous people in Sodom. Then Abraham, knowing Sodom, realized that there might not be 50 righteous people there. He continued to plead with YHWH. He said, "If there would be 45 righteous people, would you destroy it?" YHWH said, "No, I will not destroy it." He continues to go lower: for 40 righteous people, will you destroy it? YHWH said, "No, not for 40." Then he says 30 and then 20, and then finally he stops at 10 righteous people.
Abraham knew that there were very few righteous people in Sodom, including his nephew Lot, who would be killed along with everyone else if YHWH destroyed Sodom.
As we enter Chapter 19 of Genesis, we see in the very beginning that Lot was visited by two angels. These weren't two ordinary angels. These were two messenger angels who would eventually tell Lot to get him and his family out of Sodom.
As we continue reading, we see in verses 4 through 11 just what YHWH was speaking about in chapter 18, verse 20 when he said, "The cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous". The men of Sodom wanted Lot to bring out the two angels disguised as men to them, that they might know them, which means to have a sexual relationship with them. They so much wanted to get to these men that they even pressed against Lot's door to go inside to get to the men. The two angels pushed them outside, and blind, it closed the door, and then blinded the men of Sodom so that they couldn't even find the door.
After this, the two angels went to Lot and asked him, "Is there anyone there beside his two sons-in-law and his two daughters?" He told them in verse 12 to bring them out of this place. He warns them that we will destroy this place because of the cry of them was great before the face of YHWH, and that YHWH had sent them to destroy this city. So Lot went and told his sons-in-law about this, and they mocked him and did not believe that this was true.
They were in for a very rude awakening because it says in verse 15, "The morning arose and the angels hastened Lot to take his two daughters and his wife and get out of the city, because the city was about to be consumed because of their iniquity." An interesting thing about the Scripture here in verse 16) it says that while he lingered. That word lingered in Hebrew is H4102. It means to question or to hesitate, or by implication to be reluctant. So it seems that Lot was a little reluctant to leave, maybe because he wanted others to get out of the city with him.
The angels knew the urgency of Lot and his family getting out of the city. It says they laid hold upon his hand and upon the hand of his wife and the hand of his two daughters to bring them forth outside the city before they destroyed it.
Once they got them out of the city, they told them to flee for their life. They told them to actually flee to the mountains, but Lot wanted to go to the city called Zoar. Now, this word Zoar is the Hebrew number H6820, which comes from H6819 and means little. It is a place east of the Jordan. In the primitive root it means to be small, that is figuratively ignoble. The angels agreed with this and told them that they would not destroy Zoar. It was right after this that YHWH had destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah by raining brimstone and fire out of heaven.
The next verse the key verse and is sad indeed. It says, "But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt." That pillar there is the Hebrew number H5333, and it means something stationary, that is, a perfect military post or a statue.
They were warned in verse 17 by the angels not to look back, but just to escape to the mountains. Lot's wife was disobedient to this command and for her disobedience was immediately killed by YHWH.
Just like Lot's wife, we can sometimes want to look back to and want to go back and do the things of this world. YHWH tells us not to go back to the things of this world. Galatians chapter 4 verse 9 says, "But now after that ye have known YHWH, or rather are known of YHWH, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?" YHWH doesn't want us to go back to bondage; YHWH wants us to be free.
In Galatians 5:1, it gives us a very important point. He says to stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Messiah hath made us free and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Now you would ask, "Well, how can we be free?" Well, it says in John chapter 8 verse 36, "The Son therefore shall make you free; you shall be free indeed." Also in John Chapter 8 Verse 32, "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.".
This is the same mistake the children of Israel did when they were delivered out of Egypt. They did not have any food and water. They wanted to go back to Egypt instead of believing that YHWH was going to deliver them and give them the food and water that they needed.
Today, don't make the same mistake as Lot's wife made by looking back. YHWH wants us only to look forward, look to him. YHWH doesn't want us to look back at our past, the things he delivered us from. But he wants us to look forward to him.
I want to close this study today with the following scriptures from Philippians chapter 3 verses 13 and 14. Paul is saying, " Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of YHWH in Messiah.
