Windows Open Toward Jerusalem
(I Am With You: Courage Rooted in God’s Nearness – Daniel 6)
Scripture Reading (NKJV):
Daniel 6:7–10
All the governors of the kingdom, the administrators and satraps, the counselors and advisors, have consulted together to establish a royal statute and to make a firm decree, that whoever petitions any god or man for thirty days, except you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions.
Now, O king, establish the decree and sign the writing, so that it cannot be changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which does not alter.”
Therefore King Darius signed the written decree.
Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days.
Daniel 6:21–23
Then Daniel said to the king, “O king, live forever!
My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths, so that they have not hurt me, because I was found innocent before Him; and also, O king, I have done no wrong before you.”
Now the king was exceedingly glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no injury whatever was found on him, because he believed in his God.

1. The Plot Against a Faithful Man
Daniel 6 opens not with rebellion, but with excellence. Daniel distinguished himself because “an excellent spirit was in him” (Daniel 6:3). His enemies could find no corruption, no negligence, no moral failure.
So they attacked the only place they could: his devotion to God.
The strategy was calculated. The decree was legal. The trap was spiritual. Daniel was not persecuted for incompetence or scandal — he was targeted for faithfulness.
Courage here begins with integrity long before it reaches the lions’ den.

2. Windows Open Toward Jerusalem
Daniel knew the decree had been signed.
He did not protest publicly.
He did not gather supporters.
He did not alter his routine.
He went home and prayed — “as was his custom since early days.”
This is not theatrical defiance. It is steady obedience.
The open window toward Jerusalem was not a political statement. It was a posture of hope. Even in exile, Daniel faced the place of promise. Even in captivity, he prayed toward restoration.
Courage in Daniel 6 is not sudden heroism. It is long-formed habit.

3. The Den Is Sealed — But Not Sovereign
Daniel is lowered into the den. A stone is placed over the mouth. The king’s signet seals it.
It looks final.
But earthly seals do not limit heavenly authority.
The king cannot sleep. Daniel can.
The king fasts in anxiety. Daniel rests in God.
The difference is not circumstance — it is presence.
“My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths.”
God did not remove Daniel from the den. He ruled within it.

4. Courage Without Boasting
When Daniel speaks to the king, he does not brag. He does not condemn. He simply testifies.
“My God sent His angel…”
The focus is not Daniel’s bravery. It is God’s faithfulness.
This is crucial for the “I Am With You” theme. Courage here is not self-assertion. Daniel does not survive because of personal strength or spiritual superiority. He survives because God is near.
And even if he had not survived, the courage would have been the same.
True courage is not proven by rescue — it is anchored in presence.

5. God Honored in Exile
The outcome of Daniel 6 mirrors Daniel 3. A pagan king publicly honors the living God.
Exile becomes testimony.
Courage rooted in God’s nearness does not always change laws immediately. But it does reveal who truly reigns.
Daniel’s life shows us something steady and unglamorous: obedience in private prepares us for faithfulness in crisis.
And the God who is with us in prayer is with us in the den.
