RETURN TO GOD THEREBY RETURN TO DESTINY.
We usually talk about Samson’s hair, but we rarely talk about what was going through his mind.
There’s A SPECIFIC KIND OF MISERY THAT COMES WHEN WE OUTLIVE OUR OWN "GLORY DAYS." It’s that moment WE LOOK INTO THE MIRROR AND REALIZE THAT THE PERSON EVERYONE USED TO LOOK UP TO, the guy WHO HAD IT ALL TOGETHER, IS GONE. And he’s not coming back.
We wake up, and for a few seconds, we feel normal. Then we remember. We remember the job we lost, the marriage that fell apart, or the reputation we trashed in about five minutes. We're still alive, but we feel like a ghost.
We’re Stuck Watching Others Do The Things That Used To Be Easy For Us. The world moves on, but We’re Just Stuck In This Loop Of "what if" and "if only," Grinding Away Until WE’RE EXHAUSTED. THAT WAS SAMSON’S REALITY in the Philistine prison.
The Book of Judges puts it bluntly. The Philistines didn't just capture him; they put out his eyes, brought him down to Gaza and bound him with bronze shackles. HE WENT FROM BEING THE STRONGEST MAN ALIVE TO BEING A HUMAN ENGINE, WALKING IN CIRCLES TO GRIND GRAIN.
HE COULDN'T SEE the people making fun of him, BUT HE COULD HEAR them. He had to listen to the laughter of the same people who used to run away when they heard his name.
THE WORST PART probably wasn't the prison, but THE FEELING THAT GOD HAD STOPPED TALKING. For years, SAMSON FELT THIS MASSIVE RUSH OF STRENGTH whenever he needed it. NOW? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. JUST THE SOUND OF THE MILLSTONE.
HE TRADED HIS ENTIRE LIFE’S PURPOSE FOR A FEW HOURS OF FUN, and NOW HE WAS THE LOCAL JOKE.
In that prison, God Doesn't Give Samson a "Five Step Plan" To Get His Life Back. He just sits there while his hair grows back inch by inch. IT TOOK A LONG TIME. Our God wasn't in a hurry. He wasn't impressed by Samson previous successes, and wasn't shocked by how badly Samson had failed either.
The turning point didn't happen because Samson suddenly felt confident again. HE FINALLY REALIZED HE HAD ABSOLUTELY NOTHING LEFT.
When they brought him out to the temple to make fun of him, HE DIDN'T ASK FOR HIS OLD LIFE BACK. HE DIDN'T EVEN ASK TO SEE AGAIN. HE JUST ASKED FOR ENOUGH STRENGTH TO FINISH THE JOB, EVEN IF IT COST HIM EVERYTHING. He was mentally exhausted.
He leaned against those pillars as A GUY WHO FINALLY UNDERSTOOD THAT HIS STRENGTH WAS NEVER REALLY HIS TO BEGIN WITH. He treated a gift like a toy, and HE FINALLY ADMITTED IT. GOD MET HIM RIGHT THERE IN THE PRISON; IN THE MIDST OF MOCKERY.
OUR "USEFULNESS" ISN'T WHAT MAKES US VALUABLE TO GOD. We spend our lives trying to be the "strong one" or the "successful one," thinking that’s why we’re loved. But SAMSON HAD TO LOSE HIS SIGHT, HIS STRENGTH, and HIS EGO TO FINALLY SEE THE TRUTH.
WE DON'T HAVE to PERFORM TO GET GOD’S ATTENTION. Sometimes, the most spiritual thing you can do is just stop trying to fix yourself and admit you’re broken. SAMSON FINALLY STOPPED TRYING TO BE A HERO AND STARTED BEING HONEST WITH HIMSELF.
So, what do we do when the version of ourself that everyone liked is gone, and we’re the only one left to deal with the version you hate? WAKE UP AND TURN TO GOD!!!
