Good morning to everyone. Grace and Peace be with you.

Sometime back in the 90s, when my stepfather was still alive, he liked to order or buy clothes from LL Bean. In one of his purchases, he bought a maroon fleece-lined long-sleeve shirt. In the course of one of my mom’s purges of the closets in their home, she gave this shirt to me. This shirt is cozy. This shirt is just the right weight most of the time. This shirt looks like it is well over 20 years old (well-worn and torn). I like wearing it in public because it creates assumptions in others' minds about how well I am doing in life.

I bought my bible well over twenty years ago. I am thinking we were still living in Lafayette when I bought it, and we have been in this house for twenty years. It has seen better days. The pages are crinkled, some torn. Tabs pulling on the tattered pages. I had to tape the binder back together before it fell off completely. The maps and information in the back are hanging on by a prayer and a hope. I like taking it to snooty places, including churches, and listening to the whispers about how bad my bible looks.

The two things that these two items have in common are their wear of age and trial. The shirt, which I am wearing right now, and my battle riddled bible, which is right beside me, have carried and comforted me in some of my darkest times. They have weathered the scars of the world admirably. They have protected me through storms and trials. They have been my shelter and anchor when anxiety tries to creep in.

This shirt will be mere threads before I even consider discarding it. My bible, this bible, the war stories that it has led me through, is all I need to continue to take each new step. I may, at some point, have to get one with larger writing, but my little pink (yes pink) bible is MY sword. The gift of the Father that battles the enemy for me daily.

Appearances are deceiving. I wear this shirt in public for the reactions of others because people are judgmental of appearance. But those who look past what their eyes tell them, they are the truest of true people. They are the ones who see past your shields and see your heart. My prayer for you today is that you all have people like that in your corner. Friends, they are the blessings God has sent you.

Be blessed.

***I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me. – Psalm 8:17
