“I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.” John 12:46

A few years ago, I told my husband I would like to learn photography as a new hobby. Being the supportive spouse that he is, he got me a Nikon D3300 camera. I was ecstatic with my new DSLR—short for digital single-lens reflex camera. Light that comes in through the lens is reflected by a mirror to a prism in the viewfinder. Then a click of the shutter opens the mirror, allowing the light reflection to be captured by the image sensor, resulting in a picture.

In layman’s terms, photography is simply the process of capturing light with a camera to create an image. Light must be present to take photos, because without it, a photo would look so dark. Light is so important because not only does it determine the brightness and darkness of a photo, but also its tone, mood, and atmosphere.

Can you imagine living in a world of darkness? In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth, our world was in total darkness. But when He said, “Let there be light,” then light appeared. God knew that light was so important for us to see the beauty of His Creation. But then sin entered our world, and God’s Creation became wrapped up in the darkness of sin, sorrow, pain, and death.

In the Bible, John 12:46 gives us comfort, though. Jesus says, “I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.” Jesus is the Light of the World. He does not want His people to walk in darkness, and that’s why He bids us to come to Him and learn of Him.

Jesus reveals the character and love of God, and if we believe and reflect Jesus’ light, our lives are brightened with His righteousness, love, mercy, grace, and forgiveness.

We face struggles each day, and sometimes these struggles keep us in dimness. But Jesus invites us to believe in Him as the Light of the World so we do not have to abide in darkness. Believing in Him involves commitment and obedience. Are you ready to allow Jesus to be the Light of your life?
